Weight Loss: The Key to Discipline

Recently, two co-workers of mine were discussing their weight loss efforts and part of that conversation stuck with me. One of them said, "It sure is a lot harder to lose weight than it is to gain it." The other one answered, "Yeah, thats because gaining weight is fun." I laughed with them, because there is some truth to that statement.

Yes, it can be fun to eat with abandonment and not think about whether what you are eating is healthy or not; it is only the consequences that are painful. Examples of shorter term consequences are pain in your stomach, indigestion, and sluggishness. The longer term consequences are high blood pressure, heart disease, and shortness of breath. Seeing your appearance change for the worse is painful too. Focusing on these consequences is key to developing self-discipline.

Discipline is necessary to achieve your weight loss goals and any goal that you want to achieve in life. after all, you dont have to employ discipline to do those things that you enjoy. For example, I wouldnt have to discipline myself to eat chocolate bars because I enjoy them, however I do have to discipline myself to limit them in my life. How do I do it? Discipline requires two skills: Desire and diversion.

Desire means that you have to want the goal that your discipline will help you achieve more than anything. For example, I wanted to lose weight and get healthy more than I wanted the chocolate bars. Each time I desired the chocolate bar, I had to remind myself of the alternate goal and make it real and vivid. I had to see myself with that goal already achieved and experience the pleasure of it. I had to make that pleasure more intense than the pleasure I imagined I would receive from eating the chocolate bar.

The second skill is diversion, which is simply engaging in an activity that diverted my attention away from the undesirable activity. In the chocolate bar example, I had to either give myself something that I would enjoy eating that was healthier for me or perform an alternate activity that would help me better meet my needs. For example, if I was angry, eating a chocolate bar would not help me, but taking a long walk to cool off likely would.

My co-worker was right: For many of us, losing weight is harder than gaining it. But we need to remind ourselves that, although it is harder to lose weight, it is not impossible. It is also worth the effort. Then we use our key of discipline to help us achieve what we want. It is the only way to get the body that we deserve.

Champions League - Second Round Preview

The 21-22 February will see the 16 remaining teams in the Champions League battle it out for a place in the coveted final held on 17 May in Paris. The second round fixtures have been decided so here is a run down of who is left in the competition and their chances of progressing to the quarter finals:

Inter Milan vs Ajax
Inter qualified comfortably from Group H as winners and have a favourable match against Ajax. The Dutch side qualified as runners up of Group A without too much trouble. Inter are overwhelming favourites to qualify for the quarter finals and striker Adriano, with four goals so far in this competition, poses the main threat. Manchester City. Verdict: Inter to qualify at 2/5.

AC Milan vs Bayern Munich
Milan stuttered through the first round, with just three wins in six matches, before eventually topping the group ahead of PSV Eindoven. Andriy Shevchenko is the tournaments most dangerous striker with six goals. However, Bayern Munich should not be underestimated. They dumped out arsenal at this stage last season and were only edged out by a single goal against Chelsea in the quarter finals.Verdict: AC Milan to qualify at 4/6.

Liverpool vs Benfica
The Reds take on the team who dumped Manchester United out of the cup and are firm favourites to progress to the quarter finals. Liverpool were unbeaten and hadnt conceded a goal in 11 league and cup games until Sao Paulo denied them the world club Championship on 18 December. Benficas 2-1 win over Manchester United was a shock result, but one they are unlikely to reproduce. Ronald Koemans side are only sixth in their domestic league and are likely to see their interest in the Champions League come to an end at this stage of the competition.Verdict: Liverpool to qualify at 4/9.

barcelona vs Chelsea
This was the most "anticipated" draw in terms of a replay of last seasons second phase encounter. barcelona have won 13 games straight in La Liga, while Chelsea have topped the premiership since August, losing just one match, against Manchester United, all season. barcelona have also been unstoppable in europe, winning five out of the six group. Despite the unquestionable talent at his disposal, jose Mourinho may find his Chelsea team outgunned this time around.Verdict: barcelona to qualify at 5/6.

Lyon vs PSV Eindoven
Lyon are a team not to be underestimated in this seasons Champions League and won their group ahead of the glamorous Real Madrid. John Carew is Lyons top goalscorer with four goals while Juninho has laid on three assists. PSV will have their backers but Lyon remained undefeated in the group stage and should edge this encounter.Verdict: Lyon to qualify at 1/2.

Villarreal vs Rangers
An upset could be on the cards in this encounter with Rangers a large price to qualify ahead of Spaniards Villarreal. under-fire Rangers boss Alex McLeish may be ridiculously off-the-pace in the Scottish premier, but he has got it right in europe and Rangers have become the first side north of the border to venture this far in the competition. Villarreal scored just three times in six group stage matches.Verdict: Rangers to qualify at 5/2.

Real Madrid vs arsenal
This is the first time the two have clashed in Champions League and the bookmakers are having difficulty separating them. The Gunners won their five opening matches in the group stage before an experimental line-up drew 0-0 with Ajax in the final round of fixtures. Real Madrid have plenty of attacking power in their line up but are suspect at the back which could be to Arsenals advantage.Verdict: Arsenal to qualify at 10/11.

Juventus vs Werder Bremen
Juventus stormed through the group stage, winning five out of six matches, with david Trezeguet scoring four goals. The "old Lady" have already beaten and lost to german opposition in the competition this season, with two 2-1 results against giants Bayern Munich in the group stage. Werder Bremen are at their best at home, demonstrated in the 5-1 demolition of Panathinaikos and 4-3 victory over Udinese.
Verdict: Juventus to qualify at 4/11.

Golf Ball Material - How Has It Changed The Game?

golf ball material is not the most popular subject but I actually took a look at some of the history behind creation of the golf ball and its materials. prepare to be amazed all you avid golf fans Lol! A famous quote from a well know

English Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill once described golf as -

"a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose."

I use this quote to illustrate how golf ball material has been an important advancement in the game, and to clear the this term Golf ball material up, what is meant is the actual material used to make a golf ball and the actual golf ball material.

At the time Sir Winston made this quote he may have been right but today this just is not the case, sophisticated material is the order of the day, where golf ball material is concerned.

The most notable advance has been golf club head sizes, big and small heads, although they have generally kept the same shape.

Looking at an actual golf ball and the golf ball material we can see that the balls today are remarkably similar to the 19th century balls, the difference though cant be seen because it is in side the ball that there has been upgrades. These can be accredited to either chemistry or physics. These advances have meant that ball can be hit further bend in the air and still have the ability to stop on landing.

golf ball material was not always as sophisticated as it is today back in the 15th century scotland the golf ball was made out beech wood. In the early 17th century was the arrival of the featherie this consisted of a leather pouch stuffed with boiled feathers from chickens or geese.

More development for the golf ball in 1848 the Gutty was hatched it was made from gutta-percha, which is a coagulated latex, consisting mainly of trans-1,2-polyisoprene, that exudes as sap from sapodilla trees. When the sap is heated then rolled into a ball it would create a virtually indestructible ball.

The late 1800 begun the manufacturing of rubber golf ball materials from moulds The Ohio-based tire and rubber company B.F. Goodrich introduced the first ball that had rubber threads wound around a natural rubber core. These developments were exciting for the golf between 1800 and 1950 there was even an incident that involved an exploding golf ball.

By the late 1950s came a major development from Richard W. Rees, a chemist. He created a material that would ultimately transform the game of golf and golf ball material. With the help of another chemist Rees produces a substance called ionomer resin, the ultimate golf ball material! (for the outer shell) better still when this substance was rolled into a golf ball it showed tremendous potential.

Rees went commercial with the product in the 1960s under the Surlyn trade name, which introduced its use as golf ball material on the amateur market.

Around the same time Rees was developing Surlyn a chemical engineer Robert A. Molitor who worked for Spalding, sporting goods manufacturers developed a ball that had an outers shell made of polyurethane and a synthetic polybutadiene rubber core.

Later Molitors outer core was replaced with Rees Surlyn. These two golf ball materials became know as the distance ball. This multi layered approach is now the theme of golf balls, the first one hit the scene in 1996, which launched the distance revolution.

Chemist Tom Kennedy, vice president of research and development for Top-Flite golf, has summed up quite nicely what the objective was for golf ball material-

Firstly, "You want to reduce the spin that comes off the driver so that you don't have the ball ballooning up in the air and losing distance; hence the mantle"

Secondly, "Then, in order to have a good playing ball around the green, you have the very soft outer cover."

The latest golf ball material is found in Titleist's solid-core Pro V1, and the average driving distance of professionals as increased by more than 6 yards according to Golf digest magazine. The latest Golf ball material is said to be polyurethane with ionomer resin as the outer golf ball material.

Now you know the importance of golf ball material why not improve your golf swing! Click my link below to uncover an advanced method of doing so.
